Storytime Baker ("we", "us", "our") is a trading name of mendmyi Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. Our registered address is 20-22 Wenlock Road, London, N1 7GU.

We take the privacy of our users - especially children - extremely seriously. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

For the Parents

We know. A lot of kids' apps say they care about children - and then fill the experience with attention-grabbing tricks, endless notifications, loot boxes, streaks, and every dark pattern in the book. They're designed to keep your child glued to a screen for as long as possible.

Storytime Baker is deliberately, intentionally different.

I built this app as a dad. I built it the way I'd want a kids' app to work for my own children. That means:

  • No addictive mechanics. There are no streaks, no countdown timers, no "come back or you'll lose your progress" tricks. There is nothing in this app designed to manipulate a child into using it more.
  • One optional notification per day, maximum. If you choose to enable notifications, we send a single push when the new free daily story is available - and that's it. No nagging reminders, no "your friends are playing!" messages, no re-engagement campaigns. Ever. And you can turn it off at any time.
  • Generous free tier. Every family gets 3 free Baker Coins when they sign up and 1 free Baker Coin every week. A new free story lands on the home screen every single day. The app works perfectly well without ever spending a penny.
  • No pressure to spend. There are no "you've run out!" pop-ups, no gates that block content behind a paywall at a critical moment, no psychological tricks to push purchases. If you choose to buy credits, that's your decision as a parent - the app will never try to get your child to pressure you.
  • No ads. No tracking. No data selling. We don't show advertising of any kind. We don't use third-party analytics. We don't sell or share your data. Full stop.
  • No social features designed to create peer pressure. There are no leaderboards, no follower counts, no public profiles. Stories can be shared with family, but there is no social feed designed to keep children scrolling.

Keeping content safe

Every single thing your child types into the app - names, characters, scene ideas, magic words - passes through three layers of safety checks before it goes anywhere:

  1. Instant word check. Before anything even leaves the app, we catch inappropriate language - including sneaky attempts to disguise it with symbols, numbers, or unusual spellings. If it's caught, it's blocked right there. Nothing gets sent.
  2. Personal information check. We automatically detect and block things like phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses, school names, and web links. Kids sometimes type these things without thinking - we make sure they never end up in a story.
  3. AI safety review. Everything that passes the first two checks is then reviewed by an AI moderation system that understands context - it catches things that aren't just single bad words but inappropriate themes, meaning, or intent.

If your child shares a story publicly, it goes through all three checks again and is reviewed by a real person on our team before anyone else can see it.

Stories written for your child's age

Our storyteller isn't just generating random text. It's been carefully guided and trained to write stories that are genuinely appropriate for your child's age group. A story for a 4-year-old uses simple words, short sentences, and gentle themes. A story for a 10-year-old has richer vocabulary and more exciting plot twists. The storyteller knows the difference, and it matters.

Every story has a clear beginning, middle, and heartwarming ending. Villains are written to be funny and lighthearted rather than genuinely scary. The tone defaults to warm, positive, and safe - though older children and families can choose spookier moods or more adventurous endings if they want to. We don't leave safety to chance - it's built into the core of how every story is created.

This isn't a kids' app that happens to have parental controls bolted on. It's a kids' app that was designed from the ground up to respect your child's attention, your family's time, and your trust. It's a fun, creative way to enjoy story time with your children - any time of day.

We believe this matters more than anything else we do. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at [email protected]. We genuinely care, and we'll always reply.

1. Our Commitment to Children's Privacy

Storytime Baker is designed for families with children of all ages, used with parental involvement. We comply with:

  • The UK Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR
  • The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)
  • The ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code

We do not:

  • Display any advertising
  • Use any third-party analytics or tracking
  • Collect personally identifiable information from children
  • Share any user data with third parties for marketing purposes
  • Use data for profiling or behavioural targeting

2. What Data We Collect

2.1 Device Identifier

When you first use the app, a random unique identifier (UUID) is generated and stored on your device. This is not your Apple ID, device serial number, or any personally identifiable information. It is used solely to associate your stories and settings with your device.

2.2 Kid Profiles

The app allows creation of kid profiles with:

  • A first name (chosen by the parent/guardian)
  • An age range (e.g. 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-21)
  • Names of family members and friends and their relationship (e.g. "Uncle Riki")

These names are used solely to personalise the stories generated within the app. They are stored on our servers to enable the service and are never shared with third parties.

2.3 Stories

Stories generated by the app are stored on our servers so you can read them again. Story text, the options you selected (scene, mood, characters), and audio narrations are stored. Stories are private by default and only visible to the device that created them.

2.4 Optional: Sign in with Apple

If a parent chooses to sign in with Apple (to sync across devices), we receive:

  • An Apple-assigned user identifier (not your Apple ID email unless you choose to share it)
  • Optionally, a relay email address

This is used solely to enable cross-device sync and data recovery.

2.5 Purchases

In-app purchases are processed entirely by Apple via the App Store. We do not collect or store any payment card information. We receive transaction identifiers from Apple to manage your subscription status and maintain a record of credit transactions.

2.6 Push Notifications

If you opt in to push notifications, we store your device token to send you daily story notifications. You can disable notifications at any time via the app or your device settings, and your token will be deactivated.

2.7 Usage and Diagnostic Data

We collect limited usage data to improve the app, including:

  • Actions taken within the app (e.g. stories generated, audio played) for understanding feature usage
  • Error reports submitted by users, containing device information and error context
  • Content filter logs when user input is blocked for safety reasons

This data is stored on our own servers and is never shared with third parties.

2.8 What We Do NOT Collect

  • Location data
  • Photos or camera access
  • Contacts or address book
  • Advertising identifiers (IDFA)
  • Browsing history
  • Precise age or date of birth

3. How We Use Data

We use the data we collect for these purposes only:

  • Story generation - names and preferences are sent to our AI service providers to generate personalised stories. Only character names and story preferences are sent, never device IDs or personal details.
  • Audio narration - story text is sent to our text-to-speech service provider to generate audio. No personal data is included.
  • Content safety - all user-entered text is checked against content filters (profanity, PII detection, and AI-based moderation) to prevent inappropriate content.
  • Service delivery - storing stories, managing profiles, processing purchases, and sending push notifications.
  • App improvement - aggregated usage data helps us understand which features are used and improve the app. This data is never shared externally.

We use the following third-party services in the operation of Storytime Baker:

  • All data is encrypted in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest.
  • Access to our systems is restricted to authorised personnel only.
